HISTORY OF SFS SOCCER
WHERE IT BEGAN, WHERE IT HAS GONE, AND WHERE IT IS.
Santa Fe South Soccer began in 2001 during the first year of Santa Fe South High School. The first team was coed and was not part of the OSSAA and played a completely independent schedule. Coached by Santa Fe South Principal and Superintendent Chris Brewster, the team's record the first year was 1 win and 8 losses. In 2002, that team continued one more year of independent play and finished the year with 4 wins and 6 losses. Following the two independent and coed years of soccer, Santa Fe South became part of the OSSAA and began a girls team in 2003. With great success with a young program, Coach Brewster took the Boy's team to the 5A State Championship in 2006 against Cascia Hall only to fall a bit short by losing in penalty kicks after double overtime in a 1-1 tied game. It was the Saints' first taste of the big game, but it wouldn't be the last. After Coach Brewster stepped down from coaching at the conclusion of the 2008 season, Assistant Coach Wes Furley took over the reigns. Furley is a former player of Coach Brewster's from 1996-1998 at Capitol Hill High School. In Coach Furley's first year as head coach with the boy's team, the team went 13-0 and won the school's and the team's first State Championship by beating Cascia Hall 2-1 to conclude the 2009 season. The boy's team would return to the Championship game 4 years in a row in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, winning the last two to gain their second and third titles. The team lost in the State Quarter-Finals in 2016, but returned back to the State Championship in 2017 only to be beat by Ft. Gibson 1-0 in overtime. The team was moved to Class 5A in 2018. The team would lose to Bishop Kelley, the eventual State Champion for 2018, 2019, and 2021. Finally in 2022, the team won their 4th State Championship, first in 5A, by beating Southside rival Southeast 5-1 and going 18-1 on the season.
The girl's team began in 2003 with Coach Brewster, but had very little success at first only winning 2 games their first year. In 2004, Lonnie James was hired and took over the girl's team and grew the program to eventually reaching the playoffs his final two years of coaching in 2011 and 2012. After a tough year in 2013 under Coach Sandy Kirkpatrick, the Lady Saints bounced back in 2014 and 2015 by reaching the playoffs under new Head Coach Raj Folmsbee. In 2015, 2016, and 2017 the Lady Saints won the District Championship and in 2017 were State Runners-up for the first time in team and school history. In the 2017-18 season the team was moved to 5A under new head coach Chris Le'Vere and the girls were district runners-up and lost in the State Quarter-Finals. In 2019 the girls team reached the playoffs again, but lost the Quarter Finals. In 2021, the girls had a new head coach in Joshon Miller and the girls and the girls were 2nd in District and lost in the first round of the playoffs. In 2022, the girls got another new head coach in Francisco Flores. The girls failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2022.
